To view the full list of archive formats or change the file extensions associated with them, choose Tools | Options ( Beyond Compare | Settings on macOS) and switch to the Archive Types page. Windows users need a tool named 7zip to extract tar.xz files. Beyond Compare displays them as folders with a zipper icon, but by default treats them as files when copying or comparing them. To extract (unzip) a tar.xz file simply right-click the file you want to extract and select Extract.
